Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission declared 7 hour emergency at the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) after the leak was discovered in the in the primary heat transport system of the nuclear power station.

 PAEC has informed the media that "minor heavy water leakage" was discovered during a "maintenance job" on October 19 and standard emergency procedures were followed and  "emergency was terminated" at the nuclear power station after leakage was controlled.

Offical of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission has said, "The leakage at the plant was under control with no injury and no one was affected by radiation."

None of the workers at the nuclear power stations were exposed to radiation and radiation exposure of all workers "remained within permissible limits".

 The leakage was brought under control by following routine procedures and the "emergency was terminated"


The Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP-I) became the first commercial nuclear power plant of Pakistan when it became operational on November 28, 1972.

Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP)  currently generates 90-95MW of electricity of which 8-10MW being consumed locally at the site and 80-85MW supplied to the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC).
